Behind The Lens

Location

This is from one of my most favourite locations in the UK, its Derwentwater in the Lake District National Park.

Time

It was just about dusk as the sun was beginning to set over the lake.

Lighting

The Lake District is renowned for its beautiful light. I'd wanted to capture this particular scene at dusk for quite a number of years. It just so happened that everything fell into place this particular evening.

Equipment

For this shot I used my Canon EOS 7D Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L Tripod Lee ND 0.9 filter

Inspiration

I was drawn to how the ripples formed gently around the small rock and how the colours were reflected perfectly in the water. The soft pink tones at the horizon seemed to compliment the cooler blue tones. It was a very calm serene landscape and I wanted to capture that.

Editing

I did very little post processing as by using my Lee filter I had just about captured the scene as I'd wanted in camera. I edit in Lightroom and apart from a few minor adjustments to the tone curve and a little bit of dodging and burning to further bring out the movement of the water I did very little.

In my camera bag

That's easy! For landscapes these days it's my Canon 6D Mark II, usually my Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8 L and my Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 wide angle prime My tripod (usually) and my Lee filters

Feedback

My only advice would be don't just go for the one shot you're after. Be prepared to stay longer and shoot later because sometimes there's a whole lot more colour to get once the sun has just disappeared.
