When the moon shines bright. it shows us who we really are. Most people see that as a time to sleep or party and socialize... but for those few it's when we put in the real work to build our future.... do you turn to the wolf or are you a sheep with the masses?

Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in my hone town of Santa Cruz CA, on West Cliff Drive. This was a rare chance in which we where getting hit by back to back storms and on the night of the full moon one storm happend to be moving away and the one behind it was maybe 10-20min out from rolling in. And the sky's just happend to open up for a very short amount of time and I acted as fast as I could to make the most of a beautiful moment. I don't think I will ever see then again in my lifetime.

Time

This had to be at 9pm at night maybe. I had seen a friend post a photo of out local Wharf all lit up and the clouds creating a beautiful atmosphere and I jumped up from my computer and hustled to the coast which happens to be a few blocks from home at the time. I could see the clouds moving fast and feel the storm rolling in.

Lighting

For the full year I was shooting during that time I was dedicated to long exposure photography, I gave myself a challenge of only shooting long exposure photography no matter what the shoot was, by the time this moment was happening i had to be about 8 months or more into the long exposure experience and by then I was really good with understanding how to capture the images I envisioned. There is a stop sign about 20 yards from where I was setup, and because I didn't back a flash or external lighting of any kind I waited for cars to approach and used their hard lights as my lighting source to illuminate the fencing. I would have to wait till the cars where with in 10 yards or so before clicking the shutter because I found that if I did it too soon the head lights would not illuminate the fencing enough.

Equipment

The Camera used was my Fuji XT-2 with the kit 18-55 f2.8-4 lens with my sunpac travellite pro tripod with a remote trigger to eliminate any camera shake

Inspiration

I've always lived by the words "HERE in this moment" and having an understanding that every moment is unique and having the ability to freeze that moment in time and share it with the world is something that's always been my driving force with travel and photography and this is a defining moment for me to showcase that in a single photograph so I was not able to let this special moment pass me by.

Editing

The simple answer is I corrected any lighting that might have been dim or hard to spot (kept is as simple as possible) long answer is I personally hate being in front of my computer doing post production works it's not fun for me, (developing film not included) I was also trained traditionally with 35mm photography and that's something I've always held dear to my heart. I keep the mind set that when I shoot I only have 7-12 frames before Inhave to change film it forces me to take few photos and focus on bring patient and understanding all the setting and features my camera gear offers. It reduces the work load for post production and allows me to keep more photos as usuable works of art.

In my camera bag

My goto camera bag is the Wandrd Prvke, I have my Fuji XT-2 the 27mm 1.4 lens attached, always have the battery grip attached for allow for more relaxed grip options on the camera (I only take the grip off for day hikes when I want it with me just incase but intent on using it) I'll have my 1980's Minolta 50mm and 28mm lenses with an adapter in the bag at all times (absolutely love them to death so much fun) The new 50-140mm F2.8 is the newest beast. And I'll use the kit 18-55 from time to time. Always have the MD filters in the bag with the appropriate ring adapters, mini on the go cleaning kit I clean my gear before and after every lens swap. Always have 2 pro bar meals in the bag with my water bottle always filled.

Feedback

Get to understanding weather patterns and microclimates knowing how the weather moves especially when trying to capture clouds really helps with understanding a good point of view, challenge yourself with shooting at different times of day and using ND filters (natural density filters) to understand how the light will effect the photograph and being aware of the main lighting source.
