Location
This photograph was taken on an Autumnal trip to the Lower Joffre Lake in British Columbia. I am a self taught photographer and I love to experiment and see where the journey takes me. On this particular day, I was showing my dad around whilst also enjoying some time with the camera.Time
This was a really overcast dull day at some point in the early evening. I love visiting Joffre Lakes because it looks completely different in every season.Lighting
This was a race against time before I lost too much natural light. I wanted to capture the eeriness, the mystery and the stillness but also I wanted to capture enough light to show the detail of the reflections.Equipment
I used my Canon 70D with my 75-300mm zoom lens to achieve the detail across the lake. No tripod was used - the photo was taken handheld.Inspiration
I just love Joffre Lakes. I was acting as our guide to visiting family and friends. Having seen the bright blue waters in the summertime, I was curious to see what it looked like as the Winter months closed in. I decided that I wanted to capture the area in every season, which I eventually did. I thought that this photo was the more interesting and unexpected shot.Editing
I edited the photograph using Adobe Lightroom. Firstly I cropped and straightened the image to achieve some sense of symmetry. I also selected the most striking part of the shot as the focal point. I then increased slightly the exposure and adjusted the clarity to bring out a little more detail whilst still retaining a smoothness. I tried to avoid making the photograph too vibrant and colourful to maintain the eeriness of the stillness.In my camera bag
I always pack my Canon 70D and my trusty 17 - 85mm Canon lens. I bought the Camera from new but my favourite lens I picked up from a second hand camera store renovated and with a full bill of health. It has not let me down yet! I also carry my 75 - 300mm zoom lens, mainly for capturing wildlife that I might not be able to get close too however it did come in handy also for this shot. I find it useful if I want to zone in on some particular detail in a photograph. Lastly, I always have my tripod conveniently located, particularly if I am shooting a sunset or shooting a dark sky.Feedback
I would say that when I visit a place, I try to be patient and take the time to really look around, appreciate the beauty of nature and plan my shot. I try not to rush things and wait for a quiet moment when the visiting crowds have dispersed. I will then have a look at the shots once I get home and get the photographs loaded onto my Mac. Sometimes, I will find a gem that I really didn't appreciate at the time of shooting.
