This was taken quickly while I was at work. We were late for an editing session and I quickly stopped, popped on my OlloClip and took a burst shot. The light was so dark except for the light at the end of the bridge. The fog helped with the overall mood.

Behind The Lens

Location

It was a really cold foggy day in Chicago. I was coming back from a meeting and as I walked over the Chicago River.

Time

This is by far one of my favorite photographs. I was downtown Chicago and was coming back from a meeting. It was really cold outside. Also, it was right around lunchtime so the walkways were tremendously crowded. As I walked over the bridge of the Chicago River, the light in the horizon caught my eye. For a cold, gray, foggy and dreary day, it was honestly a thing of beauty. The river was like glass and you almost couldn't tell the difference between the buildings and their reflections. I quickly stopped and took my camera out. I didn't have time to set up the shot. I did a quick manual focus and then took about 10 quick bursts. I had no idea if I was able to pull of the shot or not until I got home. The shot was taken in March of 2017.

Lighting

The lighting honestly set itself. It was unbelievable for how dreary the day was to have this glow of light over the fog in the horizon. To me, this is what made the shot.

Equipment

I used a Panasonic Lumix G7 with the Olympus 40-150mm lens. There wasn't time to set up a tripod or any lighting. It was all handheld, natural lighting.

Inspiration

What I was trying to convey was how the city could still be beautiful on a cloudy, rainy, fog filled day. March in Chicago is always rainy and cold. It's the usually a month where we have very little sunlight. Also without leaves on the trees, flowers blooming, the cold landscapes prove challenging to find beauty.

Editing

I was able to bring this shot into light room and bump up the exposure a bit and also add some contrast to make the building pop. Lightroom is usually my goto app but this photo required very little help.

In my camera bag

My go bag, which is with my 24/7 has my Panasonic Lumix G7. I have an Olympus 40-150mm lens. A Lumix 100-300mm lens. 2 macro lenses. A ring light for macro photos. Polarized filter. 4 spare batteries. If I am going on a trip, I will pack more but the stuff that is my daily bag is the items I use most often and what I can get away with to keep my bag light.

Feedback

Had I not looked up, I would have missed this shot. So my advice is to always keep your eyes open and looking around the area you are in. Even if you can't get to your regular camera, take the shot with your phone. Practicing composition is just as important. I take about 100 photos, if not more a day. Alot are with my Iphone 7plus. I practice lining up shots at different angles. Even when I am say walking through the super market, I take pictures. As a photographer, you can never take too many!
