I took this photo very early one morning at Baron Lake in Niles, Michigan. I love taking pictures here because the water is always so calm in the morning, very glass like. It makes for great reflection & sunrise photographs.Time
Our family has a cottage on Baron Lake in Niles Michigan. Everyone morning I would get up around 5:30a and make my way to pier to see what kind of sunrise photographs I could capture. On this morning, it was cooler than normal for a July morning, around 54 degrees. There was very little wind at this time so the lake was like glass.Lighting
The lighting here is always amazing. One second it was really dark and then the sun came over the tree line. I will never forget how it lit up clouds, not only in the sky but also the reflection of the clouds in the water. I truly was angelic. Even the picture didn't capture the full beauty of this July morning.Equipment
I used my Panasonic Lumix G7 with a standard Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 Lumix G Aspherical Lens. I had a small monopod with feet that I allowed me to keep the camera still.Inspiration
Every summer, our family would spend the whole summer at Baron Lake in Niles Michigan. I think what makes any photograph I take here so special is that these are really the view I had for my whole childhood. Every morning waking up to this view. Sure the colors change, the clouds change, there were some sunny days and some cloudy days but this view, always tranquil. I could be in the worst of moods and sit out on the pier overlooking the lake and in minutes, a calm would take over. This picture really represents my life, what I love and what I look to for inspiration.Editing
The only post processing was done in Lightroom. I bumped up the exposure to bring out the reflection in the water. In my camera bag
Lately I have been trying to travel with only the bare essentials to keep my bag light as possible. Here they are!My main camera body is a Panasonic Lumix G7. My lens are either Lumix or Olympus. I have a 100 - 300 for some great close up shots. I have Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 Lumix G Aspherical Lens. A Panasonic FishEye lens. A 45 - 175mm lens. A ring flash for macro photography. About 30 SD cards. 4 spare batteries.Feedback
What I found for sunrise photography is get out there early. If you look the night before and find the the sunrise is at 6:30, then be at your location at 5:45 already in place and set up with what you need. I will line up my lenses in my bag from the order I will be using them. ALWAYS have some sort of a tripod. I can't stress this enough. If you want clear pictures, you need this!. I always have a ton of SD cards (just in case). I start snapping photos from 15 minutes before sunrise until 15 minutes after it's first break. I usually have over 1000 pictures taken when I leave. The more you have, the better chance you will have some great shots to share.
