This photo was taken in a part of Laguna Beach, in Southern California, called "Treasure Island". Much like its namesake, this beach features an island-like set of rock formations, which reduce the force of the waves. The initial impact is strong and forceful, but the waves are dampened by small islands of rocks and the resulting force of water then flows into channels between the rocks.

For this shot, I used a Canon 6D with a 24-105mm L lens. For the long exposure, I used a Formatt-Hitech Firecrest Soft Edge Graduated ND 0.9 filter and exposed the shot for 40 seconds.

I chose a longer exposure just before sunset, because I wanted to capture the luminescent glow of the silky flowing water and whispy movement of the clouds.
