Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot in Vilnius (Lithuania) somewhere in one of the streets of the old town.

Time

It was in early spring a quite cold day around 7 in the evening.

Lighting

In Lithuania during early spring it is getting dark quickly, so at the time the photo was taken it was almost dark as at the night. The only light was coming from the lamp. The street itself is surrounded by old non residential buildings, so no lights in the windows, no distractions just a single light source.

Equipment

I used Nikon d5500 and a 35 mm nikkor lens with camera set on the tripod. It is one of the cheapest Nikon lenses that you can get for the crop sensor, but despite this it is a great lens.

Inspiration

I was walking in Vilnius old town with a group of other people. We were on excursion with a guide, she was taking us through some historical buildings as well as through some abandoned places of the old town, telling some interesting stories (I hope at least some of her stories were true ;) ). If you ever will visit Vilnius or other places in Lithuania I recommend you to search online and book excursion that is not just about historical facts. Look for other options that involves interesting stories even if not all of the stories are told as they happened in the real life. So, I was walking with a group of people and we stopped at this spot only for a minute or two. I did not had much of the time as my group was already leaving the place. I set up my tripod and a camera almost randomly just pointing to the direction that I thought it should look nice as a photo. After I saw a picture on cameras display, I thought "oh that's not bad". So I adjusted some settings and fixed camera to be straight and that is the picture that you see.

Editing

Post processing was done in Lightroom. Just some color corrections and gradient filters. I always shoot in raw and I was lucky that I could bring back the details around the lamp as it was almost overexposed. So my advice always shoot in raw.

In my camera bag

It depends on situation. In past couple of months I found my interest in macro photography. So If I go on a macro "hunt" I take my Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro lens. I have some cheap extension tubes. And almost every time I take my nikkor 35mm and a kit lense 18-140mm. This selection of lens allows me to be prepared for a most of the cases. I don't own fancy stuff, maybe in a future I would like to get a high quality wide angle zoom lens. I have Nikon d5500 camera. A great camera for the money. And last but not least is a tripod. I have a tripod that you can transform in to mono-pod by unscrewing a leg, I found that a useful feature especially in macro photography.

Feedback

Just experiment, and sometimes you gel lucky just by accident. Always bring your camera with you as you will never know what is waiting behind the next corner.
