Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photograph along the shore of Upper Waterton Lakes in Waterton Lakes National Park located in the far southwest corner of Alberta, Canada.

Time

I took this photograph at 2:07PM CST (2016 June 26).

Lighting

It was a beautiful summer day with mixed sun and cloud along with some light haze. There was very little wind (usually it is quite windy in Waterton) so the lake was calm. I framed the shot so the big old trees would help to frame the lake and the mountains.

Equipment

I was shooting with my trusty old Nikon D200 and a Nikon 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 lens at 31mm Aperture Priority f/8 1/640 ISO 200 Manual White Balance set at "Sunny" Exposure - 0 step Spot Metering. Handheld. The lens I was shooting with is my old kit lens from my first SLR - Nikon F80.

Inspiration

The raw and intense beauty of Upper Waterton Lake and the mountains as well as just being in Waterton Lakes National Park are my inspirations for taking this photograph. Waterton has a hold on my heart, my spirit, and my mind. I fell in love with Waterton the very first time we went there on a family vacation in 1994, and love it more each time I visit.

Editing

This photograph is right out of the camera, shot in JPEG format. I did not do any post-processing.

In my camera bag

I have my Nikon D200 and D5100 cameras in my bag along with my Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G VR lens and my Tamron SP 24-70MM F/2.8 Di VC USD (still familiarizing myself with this lens as it was a recent purchase in 2016.) Since June 2017, I am now the happy owner of a Nikon D750 and a bigger zoom (Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS) to haul around on my outings. I have a huge learning curve to work on with the recent camera purchase. I need a bigger camera bag (and maybe a caddy to help me carry this. It's heavy!!)

Feedback

My advice for others is to take your camera(s) and go shoot as often as you can. When you are on vacation, take some 'camera time' to work on capturing the beauty around you. Look for something interesting such as the big old trees to help provide some interesting features or to help frame your photo. This photo was taken in the early afternoon .... not usually the best time for shooting, but with the clouds and light haze, it worked. Take advantage of the natural lighting when it is cloudy and play with your f stops and white balance. Take more than one photo ... you can always delete it if it doesn't turn out. You can also set your camera to help with that by setting it to bracket. This shot was done using bracketing (I chose what I considered the best of the three shots in the bracket -- in this case it was the the one at 0 step... the -1 step was a little under exposed and the +1 step was over exposed.)
