Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken in my backyard, our little green bird feeder house had an intruder! In fact the little green house was strategically place at a close and ideal distance, allowing me to capture visitors like these.

Time

Around mid-afternoon, it was sunny and temperature was mild, perfect and comfortable allowing me to take the time, observed and waited for "neighbours" to come and visit. Usually there are birds coming for their snacks, this afternoon the curious little guy came exploring the house, giving me this great opportunity to take the shot.

Lighting

The afternoon was sunny which helped a lot, as the scene was actually in the shade and there wasn't any available reflectors around that could luminate the subject. If it would have been even a little later, it would have been too dark to capture the shot.

Equipment

I had my Nikon D600, mounted with the Nikkor AF-S 200-500mm F5.6E, shot at the longest focal length and widest aperture, without any flash or reflectors that would distract the subject.

Inspiration

I like photographing wildlife especially avians, however I don't normally have a lot of time to go outside of the city to find my subjects, so I have feeders in my backyard to increase the chance of attracting subjects from the neighbourhood. Portraits of animals require patience as well as good understand of their natural habitat, and it was my lucky day that instead of a bird I was able to attract this stranger. These type of portraits also make viewer think and guess over the subject's action, which is what I like to harness within the capture.

Editing

With wildlife shots I limit the post-processing only to necessary cropping, colour/contrast/saturation adjustments, so as to keep it as original as it can be. This is no difference with very limited adjustments only.

In my camera bag

General & landscapes: Nikon D600 | Nikon AF-D 35mm F2 | Nikkor AF-S 16-35mm F4 VR | ND filters | Remote shutter release | Tripod | lens cleaning tools Wildlife/Macro: Nikon D600 | Nikon AF-S 200-500 F5.6E VR | Nikkor AF-S 105mm F2.8 VR | Tripod

Feedback

I believe for any successful capture there is some work put in advance before the shot is made, wildlife photos for instance, aside from preparing with the right equipment and checking out weather and location, understanding the habits and natural behaviours of the subject help makes shooting easier and more efficient, allowing yourself to get closer to the subject, with better chance of capturing that perfect shot one is looking for.
