This is called a "Clicker Bug". They hatch in June, grow to this size, 3 inchs and that is the only time I see one. They are named for the sound they make to scare off the bad guys who wish to eat them. When they feel threatened, they will jump up in the air, and very loudly say, "CLICK " It is quite startling I must say. Fake eyes make them appear scary from behind, offering them time to get away from danger.
