The malachite kingfisher is one of the smallest birds (5.1 inches in length) I've seen, except a hummingbird. But it's a fierce fisher! It's also one of the most beautiful birds I've ever seen with its brilliant colors.
It's widely distributed in Africa south of the Sahara. It is common to reeds and vegetation near slow-moving water or ponds. It usually flies low over water. The bird has regular perches or stands from which it fishes, usually low over the water. It dives and usually returns at once with a small fish.
I took this photo in the Okavango Delta of Botswana.
