The Hallig islands of German Wadden Sea National park are regularly flooded by high tides. As means of protection against those forces of nature the islanders build their dwellings on small man-made hills called 'Warft'.


Each house has a 'safe room' on the upper floor where the people find shelter if a storm turns strong enough to threaten their lifes. Even if the whole house will be washed away that room should remain standing like a tower.
