Behind The Lens

Location

The Laotian village of Muang Ngoi is accessible only by the river Nam Ou. Some young boys were playing in the water, among them this young Buddhist monk. I shot his portrait from the shore with a 250 (x1.6) mm lense.

Time

It was an hour after noon which accounts for the strong shadow on his face.

Lighting

Noon is definitely not the time to shoot portraits. But when you do documentary style photography, you often can't choose the best time.

Equipment

Canon EOS 7D, EF-S 55-250,, f/4-5.6, handheld.

Inspiration

Candid portraits of people is always what inspires me most on travel documentaries.

Editing

RAW editing with Lightroom, cropped square, monochrome conversion with Nik Silver Efex.

In my camera bag

Nowadays i mostly use my Canon EOS 5D iii. With this i use the EF 70-200mm f/4L lense, EF 16-35mm f/4L and Sigma 50mm f/1.4

Feedback

My advice for shooting good travel portraits: Get close to and with the people.
