The name Dragonera (Dragon) originates from the plentiful amount of Endemic lizards that inhabit the island as well as its shape. There is a Ancient Roman necropolis on the island but no other permanent settling has ever been recorded or permitted, though over the years a few other structures have been erected. In the 18th century two towers were built to watch for pirates and in the early 90s light houses were constructed to warn ships off Mallorca's rocky coast line. Since then a mega development was thawted and in 1995 the island was finally declared natural park.
