Behind The Lens
Location
I was driving up my road heading towards a planned shooting spot and watching the sun rapidly disappearing behind the hill when, fortunately for me, a neighbour happened to come along leaving a huge plume of summer's back lit dust trailing behind him.Time
This was shot late in the afternoon in our Australian summer. It had been very dry and we were in need of some good rain. As you can see, this road is unsealed, as many around here are, but that obviously has some benefits.Lighting
Lighting was provided solely by Mother Nature.Equipment
I used my trusty Canon for this and it was hand held.Inspiration
As is the case so often with photography, I just happened to come across this on my way to another location. I could have kept going to get to my planned destination, but had I done so, I would have missed this. We have a saying in our family that we adopted from elsewhere and that is, 'best is enemy of good'. This was good enough to stop for and I'm glad I did because the planned spot turned out to be a bit of a dud.Editing
At the time, I did very little post processing of my work. This would have had been cropped and straightened and had a few small foreground distractions cloned out.In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 5D MkIII and several lenses to choose from as well as a sturdy tripod and a couple of flashes whenever I go out. Additionally, I never go anywhere without a lens cleaning cloth and have them everywhere, in my car, my camera bag, my wallet, and even in my phone cover so that I always have one handy.Feedback
The best advice I can give anyone, no matter what they're shooting, is to make time to do what they want to do. Time can be your worst enemy in photography, but it can also be your best friend. Don't allow enough, and you'll often be disappointed. Allow plenty and you'll usually be rewarded. As so often happens though, sometimes you can just be really lucky - in the right place at the right time. If that happens, make the most of it.
