If you've ever visited Charleston, SC than you've probably at least seen Fort Sumter. This once active fort was built during the Revolutionary War and has much of the states history in its crumbling walls. I'm in the middle of educating my daughter on the history of the south and so this was a must see for our family. I highly recommend it!
