Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was captured in Nepal during trekking trip around Manaslu mountain, an 8th highest peak in the world at 8,163 meters above sea level. Instead of sleeping in the village on the main route we detoured from it and camped in the wild near Pungyen Gompa, one of the best viewpoints of Manaslu mountain, situated a few hours uphill from the nearest village on a huge plateau at an altitude of 4,000 meters only 5 kilometers away from the summit.

Time

This image is captured at 4 AM - I was shooting through the whole night and didn't have much sleep. Just after the sunset I had a chance to capture time-lapse of Milky Way core set behind this giant mountain and a magnificent moonrise later at night. This image was one of the last ones I captured that night when the moon was already high up in the sky and I woke up at 3 AM after a short nap to take a few more shots.

Lighting

For this shot the moon illuminated the landscape perfectly and all I had to do is to switch on our Lucy light inside the tent. It was easily possible to capture both the tent and the mountains in a single exposure.

Equipment

I shot this photo with Sony a7s camera and Sony 28mm f/2 lens. Interestingly I didn't use tripod to capture this image. Although I planned for quite some night photography during this long trip which lasted almost 1 month I decided not to carry a tripod with me to save weight - we carried all our gear ourselves and I simply would not able to take that much being a rather small female myself. I found out about a great device which makes it possible to use trekking poles as tripod legs - Trailpix. I decided to give it a try and it was a perfect solution! With my lightweight setup it worked perfectly well and I was able to capture a lot of images as well as time-lapses during that trip, but the weather conditions were rather good and there was almost no wind. Otherwise it may not work that well I suppose :)

Inspiration

I was very much inspired by the majestic landscape and space around me on this trip. When I planned it I had a few spots in mind for camping during our trip and this place was on top of the list. To get the preliminary idea I checked for a Milky Way and moon positions for this locations with the Photopills app. But I didn't know exactly which day we will get there so I pretty much had to improvise and immerse in the nature which is my main inspiration. The place went far beyond my expectations and my mind was literally blown away. The night show was truly spectacular and it was one of the best sleepless nights I ever experienced. I wanted to show the feeling of how it is to be out there and of course the "glowing tent in front of the mountains" image was the easiest way to do it.

Editing

This particular image was already looking good enough straight out of camera, however I processed it to make the best out of it. I shot 10 consecutive exposures with the same camera settings with stacking technique in mind. I stacked the sky with Starry Landscape Stacker and the foreground in Photoshop. Then I blended them together and did minor color correction and retouching in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I don't own a lot of equipment and only have a few sufficient pieces to capture photos. When I get out for a short shooting trips I take Sirui T1005X tripod, Sony a7s camera and a few lenses: Sony 28mm f/2, Canon 50mm f/1.2, Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 and an old Carl Zeiss Jena 135mm f/3.5 for Canon and an adaptor for Canon lenses. For multi-day outdoor trips I take only 1-2 lenses (28mm and 50mm) and Trailpix instead of tripod legs.

Feedback

I'm a beginner myself so I don't feel I'm up to any constructive advices yet. This image is not technically difficult to capture, but the most difficult part is to reach such location which would inspire to spend a cold night out there wondering around. Then just having a good camera and some basic knowledge how to use it as well as the desire to capture beautiful moments is the most important things in my opinion.
