Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken at around 12,000' in western Colorado. I've visited this high mountain lake a few times over the years. In the depths of winter, I can't reach my shooting location, so during early snow I raced up the mountain to get this shot.Time
This was taken around mid-day in order to get the best sunlight and beat the storm that was approaching.Lighting
With natural lighting, it helps to know the terrain. This shot was planned for optimal sunlight.Equipment
At the time, I had a Canon 70D, and I shot this with the 18-135 kit lens. I rarely carry a tripod into the back country, and routinely use a UV filter, but no other types.Inspiration
I've seen the island in all weathers and seasons, but early winter offers the best contrast between water and land.Editing
I shoot almost everything in color, and then process in black and white if it's more appropriate for the image, which is what happened here.In my camera bag
I usually travel light in the back country, so spare batteries and cleaning tools are all I need. That said, I will carry a second body and lens if I think I'll need both lenses during the day. I'd prefer to carry the extra load rather than risk a lens change in the forest.Feedback
Know your terrain, check the weather, and stay in shape. The hike to this spot took over three hours, but the destination is always worth the journey.
