Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taking during a hike in the Italian Dolomites. There was some bad weather coming and a lot of clouds. A short moment the sun appeared and send a light beam on the rifugio beneath me. It's not possible to arrange such a moment. You have to be lucky and on the right time at the right spot.

Time

It's made at the end of the afternoon of a rainy day in September. September and oktober are the best months to be here.

Lighting

Light in the mountains is very harsh during the day. The best moment are in the morning end late afternoon. When the weather isn't that good, the light conditions are getting better, even during midday.

Equipment

For this photo I used a tripod, a Canon Eos 5D mark III dslr camera with a EF16-35mm L f4.0 IS lens and a Lee ND6 soft gradual filter.

Inspiration

This area with the three peaks and particular this mountain lodge is very popular and has been photographed countless times. So it's difficult to make a photo that hasn't been made already. So for me it's just the light in the sky that has made it special and a bit more unique. It's always a matter of scoring at the right moment.

Editing

The photo was taken in RAW and postprocessing was made with Lightroom, only some basic adjustments.

In my camera bag

When hiking in the mountains I always have my camera with me. Nowadays that's a Canon R with EF 24-70 f2.8 L II. Mostly I have an EF 16-35 f4.0 L and an EF 70-200 f2.8 L II in my rucksack and a lightweight tripod. And always some ND graduate filters.

Feedback

Making beautiful and inspiring photos in the Dolomites, and many other European mountain areas, is often not that difficult. The scenery is awesome and the infrastructure is very good with many roads, cablecars and mountain lodges. You only have to be there at the right time of day, even if the weather is not that nice.
