I took this photo in West Yellowstone on a winter tour I was leading on a snowmobile. This falls is called Firehole Falls and it was 30 below and the sun was shining through and steam was coming off the water that is heated by thermal activity. It was simply being in the right place at the right time.Time
It was about 8:30 AM and we were just able to feel our hands so I could get the photoLighting
Perfect side lighting from the rising sun. The combination of mist, heated water and sun made for a nice composition.Equipment
I believe it was shot with my 5D mark 3 with a 28-85 Tamron lens.Inspiration
I pulled over with my group to talk about the falls and I was awestruck. I did not know I had this great of image until I got home.Editing
Very little it was just an incredibly luck shot. I cropped and darkened the foreground a little bit.In my camera bag
Usually I travel light as I am on a snowmobile. Two lenses the 28-85 2.8 Tamron and my 100-400 Canon second generation with a 1.4 converter. If I am focusing on wildlife such as Bison in the winter I will take my 7D second generation to get the distance bump.Feedback
I would advise them to go on a winter tour in Yellowstone. It is the most amazing time of year. Each day I have at least one awesome image to photograph whether it be wildlife or just scenery. The winter can make a good photography great just by the incredible views, light and vistas.
