The ornate design of the balconies and facade of the "house" as the family refers to it reflect the wealth of George W. Vanderbilt who created Biltmore in 1895, as an escape from everyday life for family and friends. The 8,000 acre estate became the family home of his daughter, Cornelia in 1924 after she married the Honorable John Francis Amherst Cecil.
