Behind The Lens

Location

I was messing around looking for something to shoot. Just found a random bird's feather on the ground, I think it's a dove. It was at my yard.

Time

I don't exactly remember, but I think it was midday or early evening. Seeing the lighting, I'd say it was evening.

Lighting

Really, nothing much special about the lighting. It was outdoors, so a good deal of ambient light around. The spot the feather was in was then in shade, but with enough light around to really not make it an issue.

Equipment

Just my good old pal, Sony A500 with an 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. No other equipment.

Inspiration

Does boredom count? Nothing in particular. Just found a feather and shot it.

Editing

No, no post processing, other than my watermark.

In my camera bag

I was at home, so nothing "in my bag", but I have only one camera and one lens, Sony A500 and the 18-55m f/3.5-5.6 that came with the camera. I have a tripod, but it wasn't used in this image.

Feedback

For this particular shot, my main goal was to get a very sharp focus on the frayed tip of the feather. While it may look big in the image, it was actually quite small. The key to this is to get the lowest f-stop possible, which in my case was f/5.6, since I needed my zoom to be at the full 55mm. I used manual focus, as it allows a greater precision than auto-focus. The f-stop was not very low, and something even like f/3.5 would've allowed a much shallower depth of field, but the combination of a high zoom, comparatively low f-stop, and the very low gap between the camera and subject resulted in a fairly shallow DoF, and one I am quite satisfied with.
