Location
This photo was taken in my back garden in Cornwall, where we feed the birds all year round.Time
I'd planned out this image based on some test shots over the previous few days using different settings. As this was mid-February and I wanted the sun to be on the feeder to provide natural light, I waited until late afternoon.Lighting
From my test shot's I know how valuable the sun would be, as the images without were very flat.Equipment
I was using a Fuji X-T1 with their XF55-200 lens on a Velbon tripod. To avoid scaring the birds I linked the camera via the Fuji App on my iPad, so I could sit in our summerhouse waiting for them to arrive and take the photo's remotely. The disadvantage of this is the very slight delay with pressing the shutter on the iPad and the camera taking the shot.Inspiration
I'd seen images of birds about to land on feeders, so was looking to catch them in flight doing just that.Editing
I cropped slightly to get rid of the old feeder (my wife told me off and said I should have put the new one up) and added the very edges of the wing feathers to the far left, as in the original image they were just out of shot. Since this image I created a B&W version and blurred the background fence slightly, which helped 'clarify' the bird.In my camera bag
I still have a Fuji mirrorless but now have the X-T2. My kit bag always has this, the 10-24 and 55-200, as these are my two favourite lenses. I also have 2 spare batteries and a polarising filter.Feedback
Take lots of shots, review and try again.
