Behind The Lens

Location

I took this shot on my farm east of Perenjori, WA, Australia.

Time

I just love this photo, it's one of my favourite lightning shots so far. Late in the evening a small storm had started moving in and at about 7:30pm some good lightning strikes were happening so I decided to go up to this windmill (I'd always wanted a lightning shot with a windmill) and start shooting. I took this one at 7:37pm 5 March 2017.

Lighting

I love how dramatic this looks, for the first 5-10min I was shooting the lightning was quite frequent, lighting up the sky.

Equipment

I used a Canon 600d with an 18-55mm lens set on a tripod with a remote trigger.

Inspiration

All my previous lightning photos had no foreground subject and for a while I'd had a vision in my head of a windmill with lightning in the background. On this particular evening it all came together quite spontaneously.

Editing

I processed this image in Lightroom, I adjusted the exposure, highlights, shadows and tone curve, as well as removed dust spots.

In my camera bag

I normally have a canon 5d mk ii with a 24-105mm lens attached. I also carry a 16-35mm lens and 100mm prime lens. My back up camera is a 600d with 55-250mm lens. I carry all this in my lowepro backpack.

Feedback

Pay close attention to the weather conditions as storms like this can develop very quickly, and have a go-to shooting location that you can get to quickly.
