Location
This photo was taken on the Grand Envers route down the Vallee Blanche in Chamonix, France. It wasn't a great snow day, but we managed to find some good patches of soft snow for some photos.Time
This was taken mid morning, it's always best to be on the glacier as early in the day as possible to avoid serac falls, avalanches and weak snow bridges over crevasses. It can be quite a risky environement to take photos in, as there's a lot to think about.Lighting
The original shot was quite flat and needed brightening as it was taken into the sun. This does always make the snow behind the skier look good, especially if a lot of snow is being thrown up.Equipment
This was taken with a Canon 7D mark ii and a Sigma 24-70 Lens.Inspiration
The background makes it really interesting I think, it's unusual to be able to ski that fast so close to the seracs.Editing
I've had to lighten the shadows quite a lot, and i've increased the contrast in the sky.In my camera bag
On a day like this I normally have my Canon 7D mark ii, sigma 24-70, canon f4 70-200, a canon 430ex flash, a couple of batteries and some memory cards. I also have a lot of safety gear when on a glacier which includes a rope, crevasse rescue kit, shovel, avalanche probe and transciever and an avalanche airbag, along with food and extra clothes. It makes for quite a heavy bag with all that kit.Feedback
Go for a high burst rate as the skier moves pretty quickly, lots of fresh snow to get thrown up, and shooting into the sun always makes the snow in the air look amazing.
