Location
The photo (it's a series of three photos) was taken at Goat Beach in the Abel Tasman National Park in New Zealand.Time
We were camping in the next bay so I got up at 4am to take some photos of the milky way and walked the steep climb up and down over the peninsula to Goat Bay. On the way I noticed glow worms in the bank along the path and tried to take some photos of these but they didn't work out and what's more as I spent so long taking these photos I missed the milky way. I hung around at the beach for sunrise and managed to capture this image an hour or so later.Lighting

This image was captured with a Canon 5d mkIII with a Canon 16-35 mm f4 lens using a tripod and a ball head.Inspiration
I'm trying to improve my seascape photography so seeing these rocks in the surf and knowing where the sun would rise it was an obvious choice.Editing
I've blended three images together here, one to capture the rocks, another for the sky and a final one for the sun. It was done using Lightroom and Photoshop.In my camera bag
What I have in my bag depends on what I'm trying to capture but for the seascapes I always have some ND filters to capture the "misty" water. A wide angle zoom lens, lens cloths, spare batteries and my iphone. I use the phone to find out the tides, where the sun will rise and the position of the milky way if I'm doing any astro photographyFeedback
Do your planning before you get there using Photographers' Ephemeris, find out where the sun will rise and where the milky way will disappear. If I can I try to check out the location the day before and find out exactly where the sun will rise. I find that the photopills app is the best for this using its AR tool.
