Behind The Lens

Location

This image was created in a park in San Antonio Texas as a part of a series called "The darkness in the skin". I want to mention that I had an amazing team starting with Model Macy Channel, Make Up Artist Nate Ryan and my lovely wife Pamela Rubi as assistant, we worked as a team and we were able to create great photos.

Time

When I started to plan this photo I realized that I needed to know the direction of the light in the location so I had to visit twice the park, one in the morning and one in the evening. After I compare lighting I decide due to the direction of the light that the best time would be during the evening. All the light was natural and it was around 6:30 - 8.

Lighting

In order to create great lit images is extremely important to know the location before you go and shoot, this way you are going to know the direction of the light and as well what kind of equipment you may use to modify the light if necessary.

Equipment

For this specific photography I had in my check list my CANON 6D, my lens CANON 50mm 1.8, my t MANFROTTO tripod and ball head, my 5 in 1 light reflector and the sketch of the idea or concept.

Inspiration

Ever since I had the chance to meet Joel's Peter Witkin work my perspective about photography changed to create images instead of documenting moments. So I found inspiration in music, dreams, comics, legends, tales and art. I love to build unknown worlds and characters.

Editing

This photo was created out of 3 images. The day of the photoshot I captured different images of the fabric in different positions and from different angles. When I processed the final image I just stick together the images in one as a puzzle in a way they look "natural". About editing I have used Lightroom and Photoshop and most of the time the tools I apply in my photos are curves, selective color and gradient map.

In my camera bag

Depending in the project is what I take with me to the photoshoot. For conceptual photos as this one I always have my CANON 6D, my lens CANON 50mm 1.8, my lens CANON 17-40 4.0 my t MANFROTTO tripod and ball head, my 5 in 1 light reflector and the sketch of the idea or concept.

Feedback

Find people passionate and professional to collaborate with. If I had not had the team I worked with to create this photo probably the image would be different or maybe it did not exist. Check location and direction of light before shooting, this will help a lot to avoid situations and save time. Dont be afraid to experiment or create absurd ideas, sometimes creative mistakes become masterpieces.
