Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Tuscany, just south of Siena whilst on a road trip with a friend to watch the Mille Miglia cars return to Brescia and then drive the 1,000 mile route ourselves. This was part of a two week, 2,500 mile European trip to cross the Alps to Brescia and then follow in the foot steps of the Mille Miglia.

Time

This was taken late in the afternoon of 22nd May 2012. I remember it well as we’d driven around the outskirts of Rome in torrential rain and we’re heading for Sienato stay for the night. Not long past Lake Bolsena the sun started to appear, so we stopped to take some fabulous images of the storm receding.

Lighting

We had to act fast as the light was constantly changing and literally within 10 minutes of the torrential rain stopping it was beautiful blue skies.

Equipment

At the time I was using a Canon 50D with a Tamron 18-270 zoom.

Inspiration

I love road trip photography and my aim is to take 30-40 very good images of the trip to create a photo book. When I returned I was so pleased with this image I entered it in to the Charles Hosken Memorial Competition, run by the Cornwall Photographic Alliance for the Camera Clubs of Cornwall and was delighted to gain second place in this prestigious Cornish competition.

Editing

Very little more than cropping and with that particular camera a little sharpening.

In my camera bag

I always travel light, so at the time it was just a Canon 50D with one lens. Nowadays I’ve moved on to a Fuji X-T2 with a 10-24 zoom on and a 55-200 in my bag, as I find this covers most of my needs on a road trip.

Feedback

Take plenty of images and a little wider than you may need, as it’s much easier to crop later than realise later you’ve cut off something important.
