Slate is a female peregrine falcon. Peregrines catch their prey while flying and hunt songbirds, ducks and even occasionally bats! The name peregrine means “wanderer”. Some nesting sites of the peregrine falcon have been in continuous use for hundreds of years, occupied by successive generations of falcons. Peregrine populations were in steep decline during the mid-20th century, and in North America these beautiful falcons became an endangered species. The birds have rebounded strongly since the use of DDT and other chemical pesticides was curtailed. My VB friend BrianBasson also advised me that they are also the fastest member of the animal kingdom, reaching speeds of 320 kmp or 200 mph!
