Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Sands Cove near Clonakilty, Shirley Sauna brings her mobile sauna there once or twice a year, the beach in the background is a great place to cool off

Time

This was taken in February, roughly about 9pm. Most of the regular clients will be finished by that time and the sauna will generally be left on for neighbours and close friends. February this year was mild and a pleasure to go from the sauna to the sea.

Lighting

I think when i got there the sky was clear, but the clouds moved in very fast, I find the moon can be difficult to include in photos but clouds often become quite dramatic.

Equipment

This was taken on a Nikon D750, 14mm Sigma f2.8, manually focused, and probably the Manfrotto tripod i inherited from my dad, it's at least 30years old and still fairly solid despite many days in the sand at the tide line. Solid gear, works and i try to make equipment last as long as possible.

Inspiration

Shirley who built and runs this sauna is a really cool person, I think i went down to get a nice shot to pass on to her as a thank you or it might just have been a nice night and i ended up there, both are true.

Editing

Everything is usually tidied up in Lightroom, generally as simply as possible. I have Shot in RAW since my 1st digital camera Nikon D70.

In my camera bag

At the moment the Nikon D750, 14mm, 24-70 and 70-200 all f2.8, a sony a6000 is the goto camera if i want something in my pocket and a DJI Mavic pro is the newest plaything allowing me to get angles i've only ever been able to imagine till now.

Feedback

Manual mode, everything, Focus, ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture. apart from focus which i still take over and generally maintain a very tight control of everything else on any photographs I'm taking are typically done in manual mode. Its surprising how quickly your brain adapts and has an EV solution in any given circumstance. I will generally set the camera up and then check my guess work against the meter, I'm usually right and its a really good skill to develop.
