Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at great little spot in Sunset Cliffs, San Diego. The area has a wide variety of beachy settings, but this particular photo was taken at the edge of a steep rock face overhanging the water!

Time

Most of the time, I visit Sunset Cliffs very early in the morning. This time, we decided to start the shoot late in the afternoon. It was August, and there were quite a few people at the beach, but Brooke wasn't shy and for the most part, other beach-goers were cheering us on!

Lighting

All natural light here! The shot was basically back lit, with a small what reflector to camera right.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5d mk iii equipped with an 85mm 1.8 lens.

Inspiration

My inspiration behind this shot was simple: Brooke's pure, raw, stunning beauty! I had worked with her before in studio and was dying to get her in front of a pretty location, but simple enough not to detract from her gorgeous features. I also kept the wardrobe mostly black and white with clean lines.

Editing

I did almost no color grading or overall adjustments to the original photo, actually! I did a tiny bit of frequency separation for blemishes and otherwise just sharpened and brightened up her eyes and hair.

In my camera bag

I normally carry way to much! But what I primarily use from my kit are my Canon 5d mk iii, and two Canon lenses- an 85mm 1.8 and a 50mm 1.8. I also use two Promaster SM300 strobes with a variety of modifiers when shooting in studio.

Feedback

Be adventurous! Brooke and my lovely makeup artist (www.instagram.com/beautybyalee) were a little apprehensive about shooting so close to the edge, but we overcame our fears to get a great shot! Later during the same shoot, we found a really unique and gorgeous spot that was difficult to get to, but well worth the hassle. Also, be sure to revisit locations you scout at different times of day. I usually shoot at Sunset Cliffs in the morning, but got this lovely photo at sunset- go figure!
