Location
At home in my makeshift studio that is my front room.Time
This was taken on a Sunday evening at around 6pmLighting
I had received some new reflective umbrellas and I wanted to test out the difference in the light shape from a softbox. So I setup my makeshift studio and got my favourite subject to help test them out.Equipment
I think it was just one flash on a light stand to camera right firing into a silver reflective umbrella with a grey seamless backdrop. Using my Sony A6000 and Zeiss 16-70mm lens at 30mm (45mm 35 equiv). A super simple setup that is quick to setup and tear down - great for my makeshift studio. I like to use the zoom lens as you can't predict what the dog will do, so having the versatility is useful, and having a super shallow depth of field is not so important for dogs (especially those with a long nose).Inspiration
After loosing one of our dogs to an illness, I wanted to start taking more shots of my favourite four legged friend so that I had lots of photos to look back on. I have been inspired by the guest judge Elke Vogelsang and Kaylee Greer from Dog Breath Photography, where I wanted to start capturing different shots than your standard pet photos - trying to capture different sides of his personality. Already having an interest in off camera lighting, it has been great to learn more by taking photos of my favourite subject which I then get to keep for the memories - a double win!Editing
I replaced the grey background with a texture and added a cool blue hue to offset the yellow/orange warm hue of the key light. I then did some light retouching to tidy up the eyes and fur and adjust luminosity. In my camera bag
I don't like to leave without the 16-70 on my A6000 as it covers most situations. I also like to carry a 24mm or 50mm 1.8 prime to get some shallow depth of field shots. I always have a reflector as you never know when a bit of fill light will be needed! When I know I am going to take pictures of my dog then I generally like to carry a flash and my favourite portable softbox - the Rogue Flashbender XL.Feedback
I have always read to put the key light off camera axis at 45 degrees, but I realised that if you want to get a similar reflection in both eyes (not quite captured in this image) then you need it to be more on camera axis. The key is to ensure it isn't straight on to the subject so that you still get a more natural downward light that casts shadows.
