Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from a small spit of land in Depoe Bay, Oregon, called Arch Rock.

Time

This was about 3am, as the fishing boats were returning to port. A light fog had come in and helped create the "glow".

Lighting

The lighting came from two sources: the orange sodium vapor streetlights from Depoe Bay, and the intense bright white work lights from the fishing boat. It was a test in timing to get the boat captured with the lights hidden behind the trees without the bright lights actually showing through.

Equipment

Shot with my Pentax K50 and kit lens (70mm). Held steady on my Dolica Proline tripod, which was necessary due to the mole hills around the property.

Inspiration

Frustration, mostly! I was on a family trip, and things were not going as planned. After a fitful attempt at sleep, I went for a walk and saw this scene setting up. I had my camera and equipment with me, as it was the night of a full moon and I thought I might get some good shots over the ocean, but the clouds had moved in. I quickly set up and fired off a few dozen shots.

Editing

With this one, not a lot. I was using the stock Pentax image processing program, so I didn't have a lot of adjustment leeway.

In my camera bag

Typically I'll carry my K50 and a handful of lenses and accessories.

Feedback

Scout your locations, be aware of the weather, research local events (tide tables and fishing boat schedules), be prepared to shoot on the fly, and get lucky!
