At the base of Pena Mountain in the present Big Bend National Park, at the edge of the Alamo Creek, Gilberto Luna raised a large family while living in this small house called a Jacal (hah-KALH). Built from rock, earth and plant fiber, the dwelling was well adapted to desert conditions.
Gilberto Luna lived in the Jacal until 1947, when he died at the age of 109. Luna was well known and respected among the residents of the Big Bend.
