Patches was a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who we bought as a puppy. This was before we knew about adopting instead of buying from breeders. We got him from a breeder in Missouri when he was 8 weeks old. He was a wonderful dog, but he had a congenital defect which shortened his life. He had a collapsing trachea which meant he got more respiratory infections and more severe ones. We did not even consider sending him back to the breeder because we loved him. I did spend a lot of time at the vet's office throughout the seven years we had him. Unfortunately, he was in the backyard when he got sprayed by a skunk right in the face. He never recovered from that encounter. We made the best decision for him within a week and that was to end his misery. He had been in the ICU and came home so I could help him with his respiratory treatments and percussion to bring up what was clogging his lungs. I knew within a day or two, he was going to die, so rather than let him suffer so he could be with us longer, I brought him to the vet where he was euthanized while I held him in my arms. We miss him.
