St. Luzia fortress was designed by Matías de Alburquerque in 1641 by order of the king Juan IV of Portugal, to defend Elvas at its south side. The work was completed in 1648, Its garrison was composed by 300 men and approximately 40 pieces of artillery. In October 1658 it resisted to a powerful Spanish assault, which finished with the Portuguese victory in the battle of Linhas de Elvas.
The exterior ring is walled in a starry form, whose only door is in the northern part, opposite to Elvas main square. An underground tunnel connects the fortress to the center of the fortified city. - Elvas, Portugal
