Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a glacier trek next to lake viedma near El Chalten in Argentina. The group of huddled explorers are preparing for their journey across the glacier. Planning is important for the glacier guide because the landscape is constantly changing with new crevasses and ice caves underfoot.

Time

The photo was taken around midday but the time of year was more important. It was my birthday and my girlfriend decided to surprise me with an organised "Ice trek" across the glacier. It was a great birthday present.

Lighting

The lighting of the glacier also meant that i needed to underexpose a little. Fortunately my camera had a glacier mode which took care of this for me. Fortunately, the day was a little overcast so there were no too many overexposed highlights from the ice.

Equipment

The photo was shot with an Olympus E-M1 and a 12-400mm f2.8 lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I wanted to show the lack of perspective across the glacier. The featureless glacier makes the group look a little like toy soldiers.

Editing

This was a difficult photo to process as there was not a lot of contrast in the original photos. Just a lot of greens, blues and greys. A bit of the contrast was adjusted in the background to add clarity.

In my camera bag

Not much as i travel very light.I have an Olympus E-M1 and a versatile 12-40mm lens. I alao carry a 75mm portrait lens and a travel tripod. The micro 4/3 kit is very light and completely weatherproof so its perfect for travelling.

Feedback

In retrospect i would like to have used some ND or polarising filters to capture more detail in the horizon. In general however, i would recommend travelling with a lightweight kit that you can take anywhere.
