I took this photo on a trek through the Himalayas in Nepal. I always have a camera with me whereever I go and high altitude is no exceptionTime
We had a snow storm the evening before and when I went to bed I thought that if there were clear skies the scene would be magical and white. I was not disappointed. The early morning shadows coupled with snow on the tents and the trees was amazing. This shot was around 6.00am, around an hour after sunrise, and before others were up. The sherpas had already left to collect water!Lighting
My only regret was not being up earlier to see the sunrise cast a pinker hue across the camp. The shadows that were cast along the ground added depth and interest as well as providing a natural contrast along the ridge line.Equipment
I was carrying a compact Nikon Coolpix 5400, something really handy for hiking. And lots of spare batteries at altitude is a must!Inspiration
The Himalayas is such an incredible and humbling place to visit. The unnatural presence of tents in an otherwise perfect environment provided a perfect opportunity to frame a memory. The wispy clouds, the majesty of one of the highest mountains in Nepal and the presence of a group of excited hikers was inspirational on many levels.Editing
No post processing was applied to this photo. The scene is preserved as it happened and speaks for itself. In my camera bag
This photo was taken when I was very light on with gear and some time ago now. These days I carry a Nikon D800, 3 lenses - a 14mm - 24mm, 24mm - 70mm and an 80mm - 400mm which covers just about everything I need. My tripod completes my standard pack. With spare batteries and a remote I am always ready for most situations.Feedback
Sometimes photography can be very impulsive and spontaneous but to take a great landscape requires some planning and thought to get the right angle, the right light and sometimes a bit of luck. Nature can be very kind with cloud formations and the intensity of the sun but if you are ready to put yourself in the best position at the right time you will usually be rewarded. Think out the shot in your mind and imagine what you want it to look like then wait for the right time.
