I was setting up to photograph the sunset, and this
heron just decided to make a landing where I had
composed the image, and it sat there for the whole
2.5 seconds of exposure time, and as soon as the
shutter went click, it made a dinosaur like sound,
flexed its wings and left.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in 3rd beach, along Vancouver’s famous English bay coast line. It was one of my first efforts as a photographer before I started to go to school to learn more about photography.

Time

This would’ve been around 9-9:30pm as it was taken around spring time. All I wanted was to photograph the sunset that day, little did I know I would run into such a creature that day. I was so excited.

Lighting

Not much really, it was a bit tricky because of the ratios that are typical with sunsets, and all I had was a polarizer, so I had to figure out how I would expose the image on my own terms since I knew little about photography at the time. The sunset sort of made the water and the mountains appear blue, same with the subject as well. And the pink from the skies have a sort of contrast to the whole image, at least to my eyes. It’s up to the viewer really.

Equipment

I had a Nikon d60, with a kit lens 18-55mm 3.5-5.6(?) and a tiffen circular polarizer, mounted on to a manfrotto 190XPROB tripod which I still use today. I used a bit of fill flash but it didn’t work very well, at least it brought out some of the details of the bird.

Inspiration

I was just so excited to see the heron there, being human, it is our nature to want to photograph and or record things that are new to us. And the heron was my first ever time seeing one that day, and to be able to photograph it so close to me was an amazing experience.10 meters away there was a man taking a photo away from the bird, so I thought why not incorporate the bird into the image. Without the heron where it stood, the image would’ve been flat.

Editing

Yes I did, although they were mostly basic stuff as I was still learning at the time. Basically some curve adjustments, masking, cloned out some dust spots and straightened out the horizon line, applied a gradient filter and increased the saturation a bit. After that I sharpened the image and called it a day. Typical beginner stuff.

In my camera bag

Right now, I have a Nikon D7200 with a 17-70mm lens, a remote, an ND filter, circular polarizer, lens wipes and spray cleaner, a flash light if I’m shooting at night to do light painting, and my iPhone to utilize the nfc capture, pepper spray for unwanted guests. Oh and an extra battery.

Feedback

Just be patient, and always be ready. As for birds, well, obviously if you chase them with your camera they’ll fly away. I think it’s important to be on top of things and not over react. It also helps to be able to compose an image right away and know a bit of technical stuff like f stops, which can be very useful specially if you’re using a filter for sunsets. And get used to manually focus your lens ! Another thing that can be of good help for something like this would be a longer lens! The further you are from animals, the more comfortable they’ll be and they won’t run or fly away!
