As a Canadian, I ask the question how this picture is a finalist in the Alaska wild competition.Last time I checked Manitoba was not in Alaska. Your picture is astounding, but in the wrong contest.

There are polar bears in Alaska. What makes you think this isn’t Alaska?

She has written that the picture was taken in Manitoba, Canada. I read what photographers write about their pictures. I can see icebergs in Antarctica AND Alaska.

Behind The Lens

Location
Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, on the tundra.
Time
The bears were around at all times of the day and night. This was taken near evening.
Lighting
Most days were cloud covered which was very helpful in preventing highlight clipping.
Equipment
Canon 7D with Sigma 120-400 lens, hand held.
Inspiration
One of my most important trips to learn about the changing environment for the polar bears. Global warming is causing the ice to melt and gives less time for the bears to feed. We were able to photograph the bears on the tundra waiting for the ice to form to go out to feed. Each night after dinner there was a presentation teaching us about the life, conditions and changes that these bears have to face.
Editing
I shoot RAW, so every image has to be processed. Luckily I did my research and learned to overexpose for the white snow which allowed for simple processing to crop and tweak minor adjustments.
In my camera bag
I usually carry two bodies with two or three lenses including filters (polarizing and ND) extra batteries, cards, chargers and rain jacket. There were a few photographers that had very long lenses that they couldn't use because the bears were so close.
Feedback
Do your homework before you go and be prepared for surprises. Wildlife is unpredictable so the more versatile and prepared you are the more success you will have.
