This photo is looking into the west side of Glacier National Park after the first big snowfall of the winter.Time
This is late morning. The light this far north never gets bright this time of year so you are always shooting in slightly dim tones.Lighting
Deep fog and snow require slow shutter speeds. Having a tripod handy for a smaller aperture is handy.Equipment
I shoot a Sony a7rii with a 24-70 lens. I used a tripod for this shot.Inspiration
Winter tends to be quite gray and flat up here but when you really focus in on specifics that is when shapes and color really pop. I love finding these brief moments of color and shape that are otherwise so easy to overlook and focus in on them.Editing
I did a little in Lightroom, accenting the color tones but it didn’t require much.In my camera bag
I carry 1-2 lenses. Usually a wide angle and a zoom. We have a lot of wildlife in Montana so I like having a zoom to get in close to them without actually getting close. I carry extra batteries always because the cold kills batteries. I typically have a tripod handy and a rain/snow proof bag. I do not use filters typically... sometimes a polarized lens in the summer though. I always have several lense cleaners and an air cleaner for the sensor. And a water bottle.Feedback
Look around slowly. When a moment feels beautiful even if you aren’t sure why take the time to pause and stop and look around and hone in on the details of why that moment makes you feel that way. Find a specific and focus on that.
