In Central Oregon, which was once an ocean floor, the painted hills are a reminder of the past. The bands of color are created by the decaying oceanic vegetation and oxidizing iron (rust). Now, in the middle of gently rolling hills, it seems out of place. Turning the rest of the image into black and white helped centralize the focus of this image onto the painted hills and valley.
