Because of New Zealand's location in the world offers a higher than average subtropical rainfall, the forest floor of most area's will have a thick blanket of mosses growing, like this Sphagnum Moss.
They are all to eager to suck up any falling rain water before it penetrates into the soil below.
This natural ability by mosses to hold excess amounts of water is then used as a nursery, for any seeds lucky enough to have fallen into the moss, which then germinate.
Starting yet another generation of life.
