Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Hamburg, Germany after trying and failing (mostly because of weather and or time.)

Time

I was on my way back to the hostel to get some sleep, when I figured that I was actually quite close to the this place I wanted to shoot since quite a while. I had my tripod with me, so I went for it.

Lighting

As I was walking around Hamburg’s Speicherstadt, and my subject was surrounded by water on it’s pretty side, I had to go with the light available. And there was a lot from the buildings being lit up. I had to get the right moment though, as there were cars passing over bridges, and since there was also some kind of photo shoot going on inside the water castle, so there were flashes going off constantly.

Equipment

I used my trusty Canon 100D with a 18-55mm kit lens and my Manfrotto Befree tripod.

Inspiration

I was actually inspired by Instagram;) or maybe it was 500px. I can’t quite remember.

Editing

Since I always shoot RAW, I had to do some processing. I just tweaked the highlights and shadows though, added some contrast, and converted the whole thing into black and white.

In my camera bag

I have my DSLR, spare batteries, spare SD cards, my Nifty 50, sometimes my 55-250 and one of my analog SLRs. I also some charging for all my devices and a trigger trap. I don’t always bring my tripod.

Feedback

It isn’t hard to get a similar picture. Just stand on the bridge, wait for your moment, and press that shutter button. That’s all. If you want to go for a long exposure like I did, it’s always wise to bring a tripod and some patience.
