I spent a couple of nights camping out at a farm west of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia.Time
I knew that the core of the Milky Way would be visible above this old house at about 11pm on this chilly autumn night.Lighting
It was a pitch black night. I clambered over the bricks and other debris to set up a light in the old house as I wanted it to appear to be "inhabited". I also did some light painting with a torch which I had covered with orange gel to give some warmth to the photo.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon 6D using a 16-35mm f2.8 lens mounted on a tripod set low to the ground with an exposure of 25sec. For these type of shots I connect my iPad by wifi to the camera and use it to shoot and view the photos.Inspiration
This old house is on a farm owned by one of my relatives and I had been looking for a way to photograph it and capture some of it's spirit.Editing
A little bit of LR post-processing is always needed on nightscape photos - noise reduction, highlights reduced, whites increased and clarity increased.In my camera bag
A spare fully charged battery is always the first thing I pack, followed by spare memory cards. My Canon 6D is my go to camera, but I also carry one or two Compacts, both Canons as back ups.Feedback
The first thing you need to do is to check out the location during the day and decide where you will be shooting from. Its usually cold and very dark when shooting the milky way so you need to be well rugged up. I wear a Japara Jacket which has large pockets which are very useful for carrying a spare battery, torch and other necessities.
