We so often overlook the humble creatures. These cannot survive if we over-nutrify the water, raise its temperature, or change its chemistry in any substantial way. These organisms support us, and as we kill them off they quietly fade away like rivets falling out of an airplane in the sky. When enough rivets are gone, flight will no longer be possible and we will come crashing to the ground.
