Amami-Oshima Island is widely known for her pristine beaches and emerald green waters, perfect for anyone looking for that resort holiday. However, we would like to offer another interesting view to this amazing location. Apart from ample diving and snorkeling opportunities, Amami-Oshima also offers a distinct and unspoiled eco-system, truly a paradise for naturalists to explore and appreciate. This was taken of the Yuwan River, one of the many spots that boasts of the infinite diversity of the area’s fauna.

Location
This shot was taken at the Yuwan River in the Amami Islands, Kagoshima, Japan during a travel photography assignment from the Kagoshima Prefectural Government. Lying Southwest of Kyushu, the Amami Islands has a distinct culture and history, and even have their own language dialects.Time
This was taken in the late morning as I had to work within a very tight time schedule. The ledge I identified as the spot I wanted to shoot from had very limited space with the river flowing just below, so to be safe I left most of my stuff a small distance away, and slowly tread into position, trying to balance myself with my tripod in one hand and camera in another.Lighting
Although it was late morning, I was not concerned about any harsh lighting as the sky and sunlight were sheltered by all the trees and overgrowth. A tip for shooting landscapes with water bodies such as waterfalls and rivers is that the results turn out best on overcast skies.Equipment
I used the Nikon D810 with the 14-24 f/2.8 mounted on a Gitzo traveller tripod. A polariser was also used to cut reflections from the water, which would have been quite glaring in the background if not used.Inspiration
A local guide knowledgeable about the floral and fauna had told me about the beauty of Yuwan River coupled with the fact that it would be good to offer more visual variety in my deliverables to my client, the Kagoshima Prefectural Government, and raise the awareness of this less documented area.Editing
Most of the work should have been done in-camera so I tend not to do too much post processing and prefer to present it similar to what I had witnessed. Usually, I start by adjust the white balance a tad warmer. and then maximise the dynamic range of the raw image by reducing highlights and bumping up the shadows to show detail. In my camera bag
For landscapes and travel work, I always pack in the 14-24mm f2.8. Other than that, I choose between the 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 35mm f/1.4. A travel tripod is also a must. Mine is the Gitzo T1541T with a Markins ballhead. Filters such as gradual neutral density filters and polarisers go in as well. An ND filter is optional depending whether there are opportunities to do long exposure shots.Feedback
This is a sheltered spot, meaning there won't be much sun shining directly onto the location, so I dare say you can shoot it at any time of the day. But if given flexibility in timing, I will still choose to shoot this much earlier in the morning or during the late afternoon sun for that side lighting that tends to give everything a different texture and interesting dimension.
