Behind The Lens

Location

I'm leaving in Québec City in the province of Québec, Canada. At about half an hour from my house there is a place call Gorges de la Rivière Sainte-Anne (Gorges of Sainte-Anne River). It is a little canyon who served in the past to made electricity. The exact place where this photo where taken is in the village of St-Alban in the Regional Natural Park of Portneuf, on the map it is just under the bridge who cross the river before St-Alban. https://goo.gl/maps/PRjy5BT3qWfL35d79

Time

I went to that place to try a new lenses, Olympus M Zuiko 40-150mm F2.8 (an equivalent of 80-300mm in full frame). It was a cloudy day and I took the photo at 14:30 pm.

Lighting

It was the beginning of December after the first snow fall and like I mentioned, it was a cloudy day, so the light was very soft. The landscape was very monochrome. I took the image by knowing it will be a B&W photo. I played whit contrast to obtain these beautiful black and white who let the structure of the rocks and snow popping.

Equipment

This photo was taken with an Olympus OMD EM5 and a M Zuiko 40-150mm F2.8 and for sure I used a tripod.

Inspiration

I'm a fan of Ansel Adams, I always have his work in my head when I'm shoot landscape.

Editing

I always make post-processing with my photos. Here I cropped a little bit to cut the bridge over the fall. The PP was made with Ligthroom 6 and I used the basics settings to change the exposure, high light and shadow to obtain the contrast I want. I added little vigneting and made little dodging and burning all around.

In my camera bag

In the beginning I add in my bag my OMD EM5 and three MZuiko fixed lenses : 17mm F1.8 (full frame équivalent of 34mm), 45mm F1.8 (full frame équivalent of 90mm) and 75mm F1.8 (full frame équivalent of 150mm). Since I have now a Olympus OMD EM1MKII and two zooms : the MZuiko12-40mm f2.8 and the 40-150mm F2.8 and it was almost what I have normally in my bag when I travelled. My best combinaison for a day to day use is my EM1 and the 17mm. I use tripod and ND filter occasionally.

Feedback

Slow, slow slow. Take time to look and feel what you photograph. If you bring back only two or three photos it is ok. I prefer doing photos than taking photos.
