It’s one of Iceland’s most iconic & haunting photography locations. On Saturday Nov 24, 1973 a United States Navy Douglas Super DC-3 airplane was forced to land on Sólheimasandur’s black sand beach in the south of Iceland after experiencing some severe icing.
Luckily all crew members survived the crash, but the airplane’s fuselage was abandoned. Now it’s become a photography dream location.

Location
This photo was taken on the black sand beaches of Sólheimasandur Southern Iceland.Time
I awoke at 4am and after a few days of wind and rain I feared for the worst, but to my surprise as I opened the curtains I saw the most perfect conditions, no wind, clear skies and the most beautiful start of what would be one of the most amazing sunrises ever.Lighting
The light was simply sublime this morning, I positioned my camera so I could catch the sunburst through one of the airplanes windows to make it a little more interesting.Equipment
Nikon D750 / Sigma 35mm 1.4 and a tripodInspiration
I had seen this image many times in magazines and on Instagram and I knew that if I ever visited Iceland that this was one of the places on my list, the 45min hike to get here was totally worth it.Editing
Very simple post processing in lightroom for this image, straight out of camera this looked amazing, a little saturation increase to get the true colours I had seen and of course some sharpening. In my camera bag
I normally carry my Nikon D750 / 18-35mm Nikon lens, Sigma 35mm 1.4 / DJI Spark / Nisi Filter system / Manfrotto tripodFeedback
Take your time to set up a good composition, choose and F stop of around F16-F20 to get the best possible sunburst and make sure you use a tripod to get a nice clean image.
