Behind The Lens

Location

Step Falls in Newry, Maine

Time

Approximately 2:30 PM.

Lighting

Where this image was taken I was in the shadow of a mountain.

Equipment

I was using my Nikon FE2 on a tripod with my Nikkor 35-105mm zoom lens.

Inspiration

I was going with a friend on a photographic expedition, so to speak, of waterfalls in the Newry area. Neither of us had been to Step Falls. It was a half-mile hike from the parking lot to the actual falls, the trail going beside the stream leading up to the falls. We both noticed the stream flowing over the rocks with the dusting of early Autumn leaves and decided to do some shooting there. We never did reach the actual falls.

Editing

This was while I was still using film and I decided to shoot B&W that day. I was using Ilford XP-2 film (ISO 400) and most of my exposures were around f22 at 1/2 second. The processing lab I was using then processed the film and scanned the negatives for digital files. I only needed to make slight contrast adjustments to those files.

In my camera bag

As I said, that day I was using a Nikon FE2 and my Nikkor 35-105. These days, it's my Nikon D810 and my Nikkor 24-120. In my bag, my other lenses range from a 14mm ultra-wide to a 70-300mm with a 1/3rd teleconverter, and a small flash.

Feedback

Sometimes you can find interesting places to shoot on the way to your actual destination.
